A
History of Strings and the 13 Dimensions
Many theories have come and gone, each building more upon the
knowledge of the last. It is currently accepted that there is
one fundamental particle, the "string", which makes
up all of the other elementary particles that shape our
universe. The vibration, formation, and dimensional
orientation of each individual string determine the type and
behaviour of the particle. The vibration and formation
characteristics of the string have been debated in their
details but accepted in their essence since prehistory. It is
the dimensional orientation of the particle that have caused
the most modern debate and breakthroughs.
In
early ancient times, Pol Sitanu was the first to really touch
on the nature of the universe as we now understand it. Through
some shockingly brilliant deduction and lengthy, though at
times forced, mathematics that flew in the face of
conventional string theory, he described the 13-dimensional
universe. For a brief period after their release, his writings
were studied, debated, and followed up by the most brilliant
minds in physics. It was a short time, though, before his
writings drifted from the scientifically progressive to
the borders of madness. He diverged from theoreticql speculation
and hard math to personal fantasies about stepping into other
dimensions and walking among the inhabitants.
He and a small group of devout and generally unsavoury
followers would construct and test a variety of failed
experiments and equipment to attempt to bridge the gap to
these other dimensions. He disappeared once for three weeks
and, upon his return, claimed to have been exploring another
dimension full of beauty and pure energy. It would later be revealed
that he had spent three weeks on Whinakai squandering
investors’ money on a fling with his lab assistant. His
reputation would become that of a madman and charlatan. Following up on his work would spell almost immediate death for
any serious scientist’s career. His ideas would stagnate for
years.
The Y’Hotha develop similar theories based around an
11-dimensional universe. Attacking the problem mathematically
and practically, they developed the concept of rotated
particles. While they understood the essence of the rotated
particle, certain incorrect physical and mathematical
assumptions lead to dropping the terms that would lead to the
discovery of the Blind and Spongy dimensions and their
practical implications. At the time, the theory was considered enlightening
and fascinating but the practical importance was completely missed.
The Dimensions |
Dimension | Sub-dimensions | Function |
Tangible | Length | The spacial dimensions we perceive as
the world around us. |
Width |
Depth |
Temporal | Flow | The non-spacial dimension we perceive as an object's position within a series of events. |
Spotted |
Manifold | Spiral | Small, mathematically spiral dimensions that
link other dimensions. Energy and molecules conduct through and decay in these
dimensions. |
Shrouded |
Elegant | E1 | Extra-spatial dimensions. Share similar mathematical
with the Tangibles but are distinct and imperceptible. Non-Tangible emissions,
like gravites, occur and move about here. The dimensions involved in String Drive operation. |
E2 |
E3 |
Vague | Blind | An energetic dimension involved in
maintaining the orientation of particles in relation to other dimensions. |
Spongy | |

During mid-ancient
times, at the University of Memphix, the aging teacher Elluil
Pattonetti would entertain a personal fascination with the antics
of Sitanu and begin to explore his works, first with amusement
and later with growing excitement. He would strike down
several keys mistakes in the math and let the numbers drive
his ideas rather than the other way around as Sitanu had. Elluil Pattonetti
would be the first to describe the basic properties of the
dimensions and name them as the 3 Tangible, 2 Temporal, 2
Manifold, 3 Elegant, and 3 Vague dimensions. His work was
predominantly theoretical until he took on the young protégé
Lucil Zyrne who pushed him to pursue tangible, aggressive
experiments near the end of his career. While Elluil
Pattonetti would never see the physical results of his work,
Zyrne would go on to clearly demonstrate the way gravity
manifests in the Tangible dimensions by emission of gravites
in the Elegant dimensions and subsequent conduction and decay
throughout the Manifold. The display would lead to a flurry of
research, theories, and prototypes by both the scientific and
corporate communities and eventually cause the development of
the original Pattonetti Grav drive and
Grapro gravity
projector.
Y’Hotha
are motivated to develop the practical use of rotated
particles after learning about their enormous energy potential
when disastrous experiments level a lab complex.
It
would be some time later, in early Archaic times, when Clayne
Daggon, working for the
Core Council of Sciences, would
stumble upon the function of one of the Vague dimensions in
maintaining a particle’s dimensional orientation and
stability. He would rename the dimension the Blind dimension
and his ideas would lead to another frenzy of research and
development efforts that lead, from various sources, to the
practical use of rotated particles as weapons and power
sources. The
technology spread rapidly through the
Core Commonwealth, Bjaki
Federation,
Kharkosanth Empire
and subsequently the other
empires, by trade pacts and fledgling corporations like
Tzar
and
Azatlath.
Celendreinnes
steal rotated particle theories from
Y’Hotha
giving the technology to the
Makkuth
Dynasty.
Skalds
capture the technology from the Makkuth.
Hel
Nargorest and a team of
Kharkosanth scientists would discover
the relationship between the Blind, Manifold, and Vague
dimensions that allowed rotated particles to interconnect
specific, separated points in the Tangible dimensions. His
writings would remain primarily within the hands of the IDC
but, through targeted corporate espionage, would spread to the
Core
Commonwealth rapidly. In the
early days of Antiquity, the
Imperial Design Corps
would develop working
String Drives.
Soon after, a variation of the drive would appear in the
Core
Commonwealth, developed by a team consisting of
San Jorge Industries,
the Lexicon Group,
and Elegant Particles
Laboratories. Several variations of the
string drive currently exist, one maintained and controlled by
the IDC and several sold proprietarily on the open market by
San Jorge and
Azatlath Advanced Construction.
The
Elegant Dimensions
The work of Pattonetti and Zyrne revealed the mysterious
activities that occur in 3 Elegant dimensions. Their first
glimpse was the workings of previously elusive gravity and
they were the first to determine the relationship of the
emission of gravites in the Elegant dimensions and their
subsequent transmission and decay in the Manifold dimensions.
Almost as soon as Zyrne postulated the idea that a device
could manipulate gravity at a distance by stimulating gravite
emission, corporations were marketing the Pattonetti grav
drive and grapro guns. Zyrne and others would go on to
discover the other peculiar emissions and transmissions of
unique, Elegant particles and energies but the discovery of
the mechanics of gravity will perhaps always remain the most
exciting and practical.
From an
understanding of these fundamental physical concepts come
Rotated Particles, which
provide the basis for many of our modern technologies.
