Local
Politics
Cudgel Politicians come in two flavours.
There are those sent by the Core Commonwealth to maintain Core
interests and keep the trade lanes open, the tariffs flowing,
and the Core in control. There are also those who were born
and raised on Cudgel or who settled there of their own
accord.
The government consists of a Governor
appointed by the Core Commonwealth who has the final say in
everything. There is also a council of five representatives
elected by the citizens of Orinon City and the city of
Freemarket. The five councillors represent the people and
council the Governor on his decisions.
Governor Arancilo Lazare was born on
Cudgel but spent a great deal of time in the Core Armada
building a name and career for himself. He eventually pursued
politics and was instated as the Governor for his diplomatic
prowess and ability to represent the interests of the
Commonwealth while being a sympathetic figure to the people as
well. Having seen the variety and wealth of other planets, he
is determined to bring some of it to Cudgel by building trade
and encouraging passing ships to stop and participate in the
Cudgel economy; however, he lacks any form of business
background that would allow him to plan and execute alone.
Councillor Hala Venstance showed up
on Cudgel twenty years ago and promptly built himself a small
but very profitable import/export and retail business which
quickly expanded to include a number of restaurants and
entertainment facilities on and off planet. He quickly
ingratiated himself into Cudgel politics, representing local
business interests. Middle aged, portly, and balding, what the
Councilor lacks in handsome he makes up with well chosen words
and the popular support of many of his policies and opinions.
Councillor Rassana Manassus is one of
the younger Councillors who proudly and vocally supports the
independence and uniqueness of her native Cudgel. She opposes
on-world trade as unnecessary and disruptive given the space-borne
facilities in place in the system. She feels that the surface
should remain a small, simple settlement. She supports and
assists the Anthropologists who have come to Cudgel to study
the Ith.
Councillor Vitani Simanto is another
native of Cudgel, born in Freemarket and active in its
business community. He bought, sold, managed, and worked for a
variety of independent businesses in Freemarket and eventually
became a Councillor to help support the interests of the
Second City. He is a big proponent of increased trade from
off-world and of the stable and traditionally generous
Zyfinbek Mercantile corporation. One of his biggest platforms
is the removal of the dangerous life still wild in the plains
of Cudgel, the Ith and bandits. Councillor
Joryssa Omari was a member of the
Core Council of Scientists for many years, involved in
research projects carried out on exploratory missions. She
eventually lost her taste for the brutal lifestyle of
exploration but never lost her love of frontiers and so
settled eventually on Cudgel. She is a proponent of further
surface development on Cudgel, promoting just about any effort
to grow new cities. She feels that the most benefit for Cudgel
can be gained by promoting off-world trade through Orinon
Platform and that bringing trade directly on-world would only
bring headaches. During her years in deep space, a variety of
encounters with Spinward Confederacy forces left her with a
dislike of the empire and a vocal desire to see the UTP fail
and the Confederacy falter Councillor
Antevin Hunn is actually liked by few.
His mood swings are legendary, from obsequious to hostile. His
position on the Council was decided in an extremely close
vote, primarily on his position of bringing increased trade to
Cudgel which put him in a strong position with the business
community. He is notorious for changing positions and
modifying the terms of his business deals at the last minute.
He always seems to survive, if not thrive.
